Gerry Hays

Professor of Finance, Indiana University

Gerry Hays is Professor of Finance within the Indiana University Kelley School of Business where he oversees the Entrepreneurial Finance and Venture Capital curriculum for both undergrads and MBAs within the Finance Department. In addition, Hays leads an immersive Asian start-up and commercialization program where he brings some of Kelley’s top students to Hong Kong and China to learn from Asian-based venture capitalists, entrepreneurs, and investment banks. Outside Kelley, Hays is the founder and Managing Partner of Slane Capital, a family office that has made investments in emerging technologies including new media, food-tech, marketplaces, drones, digital currencies, and virtual reality. Since 2008, Hays has funded and mentored dozens of entrepreneurs and companies from idea to commercialization and prior to that time, he co-founded several venture-backed companies including Coatchex, a bailment marketplace featured on SharkTank™. Hays is the author of The First Founders’ Equity Bible, a book that explains the process of raising venture capital to first-time entrepreneurs. Additionally, Gerry has been granted two business methods patents and 14 trademarks from the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Prior to his entrepreneurial career, Hays served as an environmental lobbyist in several Government and Policy organizations and led fundraising efforts for the successful Pam Carter for Attorney General campaign in 1992. Gerry earned a JD from the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law and a BA in Political Science from Indiana University. He is a recipient of the IBJ’s 40 under 40 award and has been a finalist for two Techpoint MIRA Technology awards.
